                             The Late Mr Oliver Fraser, Backies

                             A worthy representative of the older generation of Sutherland men died on the 16th inst.Mr Oliver Fraser,Builder Backies had attained the age of 76 yrs, and until lately he was able to take an interest in the building contracts carried on by his son who succeeded to the business established by him.

                             Mr. Fraser was a native of Gartymore, Helmsdale, and for many years was one of the leading contractors in Sutherland, many substantial and ornamental strictures being erected by him.

                             He was a capable, hard working contractor, and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends.

                             He was a loyal supporter of the Free Church. Mr Fraser was predeceased by his wife some time ago, and is survived by a grown up family of sons and daughters.

                             The funeral on Saturday to Golspie churchyard was very largely attended.

                             Religious services were conducted by Rev.A.M.Ross, Freechurch, Helmsdale, and Rev. D.L.Cattancch, Golspie

     Sutherland Estates survey 1849-Doll12- Hugh Murray succeeded widow Sutherland about 7 years ago.

     The dwelling houses then on the lot were in a ruinous state and5yearsago he built, at his own cost, a good large two storied house ofstoneand lime and slated,which cost him at least 150 pounds, exclusive of his own labour in carting materials etc. The offices are those he go tin the place- he cannot say how old they are- the walls are of stone and clay pointed with lime and roof covered in tiles to which he has lately made some repairs and they are at present in good condition.

6.  Benjamin Leslie , b. 8 Nov 1832 in Backies, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland, occupation Gamekeeper, d. 25 Jan 1870 in Rhidarroch, Ullapool, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland.

     He was a servant to the Duke of Sutherland. He moved from Dunrobin to look after Rhidorroch Lodge in Lochbroom in 1861/62.

     Rhidorroch was on the Cromartie estate which at that period was amalgamated with the Sutherland estate through the marriage of the Duke to the Mackenzie Heiress. Details of his wage etc at Rhidorrochmay be found in the estate accounts in the  Cromartie Papers. National Archives of Scotland GD305/section 2/...

     Benjamin's death was reported in the newspapers (Inverness Advertiser1feb 1870) He died aged about 37 when walking back through the hills from Strath Oykel. The body was found about 11/2 miles from his house. Dario told me this oral history. He is 3xgrt grandson of Benjamin. Our family oral tradition regarding Benjamin is Interesting. It says that he (Benjamin) was a factor at Rhidorroch where he died not of naturalcauses, but murder. Apparently he was shot by poachers. 

     Ullapool Jan 28th

     A very melancholy death occurred in the neighbourhood this week Benjamin Leslie, a servant in the employment of his grace the Duke of Sutherland at Rhidorrach, left home Tuesday morning with his sister-in-law for Oikel to overtake the mail gig, intending to return as he did not return as expected, his wife naturally got alarmed and early on Wednesday sent a messenger of to Oikel. The Messenger returned in the evening with the information that Leslie had called at a shepherd's house the previous evening, and after partaking of some refreshments left for home. Accordingly the neighbours commenced a search at moon rise, which they continued till daybreak on Thursday, when his dead body was found about a mile and half from his own house. Deceased was a quiet, inoffensive man, and much respected by all who knew him. He was about thirty-seven years of age. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved widow, who is left with the charge of a young family.
