                             Grave or Reference Panel Number: I. C. 7.

                             Location:  Villers-Faucon is a large village in the Department of the Somme , about 17 kilometres north-east of Peronne. From the centre of the village take the D72 towards Lieramont. Turn right at a CWGC signpost opposite a parking area. The Cemetery is on the left hand side of the road and the Commonwealth War Graves Plot is on the north-westside of the cemetery.

                             Historical Information: Villers-Faucon was captured by the 5th Cavalry Division on the 27th March, 1917, lost on the 22nd March, 1918, and retaken by the III Corps on the 7th September, 1918. The Extension was begun in April, 1917, and used until March, 1918; it was then used by the Germans, and British burials were resumed in September and October, 1918. The graves of British soldiers were brought in, after the Armistice, from a wide area round Villers-Faucon. There are now over 450, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over one-third are unidentified and special memorials are erected to six soldiers from the United Kingdom , believed to be buried among them. The Extension covers an area of 1,725 square metres and is enclosed on the North-West side by a concrete curb.

       Obituary: Thomas J. Linekar

       The Musical Times, Vol. 59, No. 903 (May 1, 1918), p. 214

       "Mr. Linekar was a prominent Freemason in North Wales . He wrote a good deal of Church music, and some of his

       services and hymn-tunes are widely known. In the Methodist Tune-book he  wrote under the name of 'Raymond

       Berenger.' He trained several Choral Associations on the North  Wales coast. His death was sudden, taking him from full

       activities and a strenuous life. The death of CLAUDE DEBUSSY  is recorded on p. I99."

       Words: The Psalter, 1912.

       Music: Colwyn Bay

       O Lord, be Thou my Helper true,

       For just and godly men are few;

       The faithful who can find?

       From truth and wisdom men depart,

       With flattering lips and double heart,

       They speak their evil mind.

       The lips that speak, the truth to hide,

       The tongues of arrogance and pride,

       That boastful words employ,

       False speaking tongues that boast their might,

       That own no law, that know no right,

       Jehovah will destroy.

       Because the poor are sore oppressed,

       Because the needy are distressed,

       And bitter are their cries,

       The Lord will be their Helper strong;

       To save them from contempt and wrong

       Jehovah will arise.

       Jehovah’s promises are sure,

       His words are true, His words are pure

       As silver from the flame.

       Though base men walk on every side,

       His saints are safe, whate’er betide,

       Protected by His Name.

The design of this site makes access to certain parts of  the memorial impossible by wheelchair. For further information  regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on telephone number 01628 507200.

                             Location Information: Ypres (now Ieper ) is a town in the Province of West Flanders . The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of  the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai ( Kortrijk ). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of thelocal Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

                             Historical Information: The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914,when as mall British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres . This was the first time gas had been used by either side  and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence. There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert  German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge  was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which  began atthe end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against  determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The  campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial  success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort  by the Allies in September. The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed  many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites. The site of  the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates  those of all Commonwealth nations(except New Zealand ) who died in the Salient, in the case of United Kingdom casualties before 16 August 1917. Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the  furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly  the end of the war. Other New Zealand casualties are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery . The Ypres(Menin Gate) Memorial now bears the names of more  than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer in July 1927.

                             Location Information: The Basra Memorial was originally sited within Basra War Cemetery but in 1997 the Memorial was moved by presidential decree. The move, carried out by the authorities in Iraq , involved a considerable amount of manpower, transport costs and sheer engineering on their part, and the Memorial has been re-erected in its entirety. The Basra Memorial is now located 32 kilometres along the road to Nasiriyah, in the middle of what was a major battle ground during the Gulf War. The Panel Numbers quoted at the end of each entry relate to the panels dedicated to the Regiment served with. In some instances where a casualty is recorded as attached to another Regiment, his name may alternatively appear within their Regimental Panels. Please refer to the on-site Memorial Register Introduction to determine the alternative panel numbers if you do not find the name within the quoted Panels.

                             Historical Information: The Basra Memorial bears the names of more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the operations in  Mesopotamia from the Autumn of 1914 to the end of August1921 and whose  graves are not known.
