THE MAINLINE OR GOLSPIE MELVILLES

     Since this was the first line researched and the line from which my earliest known ancestors came it is the principal line of my research and designated the Mainline Melvlles.  It does not claim any precedence over other lines except in this interest to myself.  I have tried to research many of the connected lines and will reproduce those on this website as information, space and time permit.

     This line starts with certainly from Alexander Melville, born c1755, and Sarah Mackay but it is likely that it goes one further generation back to William Melven and Ana Sutherland with estimated birth dates of 1730.

     Any additions or corrections to the data would be very much appreciated.

     Please note that this file is limited to seven generation to protect data relating to living individuals or those likely to be living.  Information on later generations may be provided on a 'need to know' basis.

DESCENDANTS OF ALEXANDER MELVILLE BORN C1755

Generation One

1.  Alexander¹ Melville, b. Abt 1755 (son of William Melven [1730 -     ] and Ana Sutherland [1730 -     ]), d. Abt 1829 in Doll, Clyne , Sutherland, Scotland.

     B. c1755. Place of birth unknown. Parents probably William Melven and  Ana Sutherland.  Situation of grave stones and naming evidence  suggests this. Very possibly brother of John Melville born c1750. Not found in1841 census and later information indicates dead by then. Name Melville variously spelt as Melvelle, Melven,  Melvin, Melville. According to survey of Clyne residents in1849 Alexander died about 1829 on the tenancy he had built a house on about 1819.  This house was in poor repair when in the hands of his son-in-law William Gunn in 1849.  The house was built of stone and clay with a roof thatched with divots.  It stated that Alexander got no timber from the proprietor for the construction.

     He married Sarah MacKay.

     1841 Census - Agricultural Labourer; 1861 Census - Tenant.  90 years at D.  Buried Golspie Cemetery.  Death reported by son, Henry. According to survey of Clyne residents in 1849 William bough his lot in the Doll about 1839  from a William Sutherland, who went to America, for 'a311.  In addition to the lot he also received a small patch of potatoes and 'a little spot of bere'.  When bought there was no good house on the lot though there was a ruinous dwelling house.  William used this for one year but was obliged then to rebuild it.  In 1849 the dwelling was the third he had built since coming to the lot of land.  The 1849 house was of stone and clay and partly lime and the byre and stable were of stone and clay.  All were thatched with straw and in 'middling good' repair.

     On 28 November 1804 recorded as in Canada in the 42nd Foot Soldiers 2nd Battalion.    

4.  Alexander² Melville (Alexander¹), b. 1784, baptized 1784, d. 24 Apr 1830.

     At birth of daughter, Sara Melvin, given by-name of Drumer.  This presumably to distinguish from Alexander 'Forry' and  Alexander 'Sergeant'.  Interred in Golspie Cemetery with Doll Melville  group indicating family relationship.  Hence this and other circumstantial evidence such as places of birth of families suggests this Alexander is the son of Alexander and Sarah.

     He married Lillie Sutherland, b. Abt 1787, d. 24 May 1828.

     Lillie: Interred in Golspie Cemetery - Table Stone.  Birth date estimated from details on stone.

     Date given from OPRs is a Baptismal one. Recorded as Melvin in the OPR. Farmer/Tenant. In Uppat at birth of children except David and all  other records, except 1826 Militia give Henry at Uppat.  Sputie and Uppat adjacent to one  another and likely Henry and family always in same property sometimes described as Sputie and at other times Uppat. Farmer in 1841 at Uppat and Farmer of 5 acres at Uppat  in1851.  At Doll in 1813 and listed as five feet eight and a half  inches and in SLM, Grenadier Company.  D. in Uppat, Doll. D. Rpt. by son, George.  87 years at D. by certificate and grave stone.   Interred  St. Andrews Churchyard, Golspie. 1826 Militia List - Given as Harry Melville, labourer, Spootie, over  30 - children and poverty.

       Catherine: First Husband, William Sutherland, Road Contractor.   Birth Place  in1871 given as Contin, Ross-Shire.  D. Rpt. by G-Dau., Jane  Sutherland. According to survey of Clyne residents in 1849 Catherine succeeded her husband at tenant after his death in 1847.  He had succeeded his father about 1827.  The present house was built by her husband about 1837 and was built of stone and clay thatched with straw on a roof which was getting frail.  The byre and barn, in bad repair in 1849, were made of dry stones with a divot roof.

The Sutherlands may be her in-laws family and possible that Elizabeth Matheson is the mother of Martin Matheson, Sarah's future husband. Spellings and dates at variance between records. Said to have been coming home from a pub drunk one night and decided to make horse jump a culvert - horse decided not to! Horse went home alone and then sons found George's body.

In 1884 he was residing at 7 Walworth Terrace, Glasgow.  D. New York, USA on 23 Dec 1891 or possibly on 26 Dec 1891 as  this second date is that given by the records where he is buried ?  Green - Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.  He is interred there with  son John Ellsworth Melville and at least three others ? John G  Melville(12/8/1894), Frank Melville (11/11/1899) and Henry Melville (18/12/1895).  The latter three may be children of John  Ellsworth Melville.   His death in New York is noted on his parents  grave in Golspie.  Along with that of brothers Alexander and William  who died in Canada.  A John Melville arrived New York, USA on the SS Furnessia and  was processed at immigration on 28 Sept. 1885.  Travelled from  Greenock, Glasgow via Moville, Ireland. Thought this might have been  this John but a later marriage in Scotland in 1885 has thrown doubt on  this - unless, of course, he went to US returned to Scotland and then  went to the US again. John registered the birth of his first child to  his second wife in December 1885 and the third in 1888.  At the birth  of his first and third children to Catherine Jane Barclay he has  signed the register and said the was present at birth.  The  signatures, albeit with slight variations, are very similar at the  births of children in first and second marriages indicating that John  was present in Scotland at the registration of daughter Catherine  Jane Melville on 3rd July 1888 and possibly at the birth three  weeks earlier.  A Mr Melville travelled from Scotland to New York in late 1888  and again possibly the John in question.  Being a Commercial Traveller  there is the possibility that business interests took him across  the Atlantic more than once though, of course, the fact his family to  his first wife emigrated to the USA might be the motivation.

       Catherine: Catherine never married & only had one child. She was known as Kate Roy or Kate Ruadh.  The designation Ruadh or Roy, meaning red, may have  been applied due to her having red hair or, more likely, because it  was a family bye-name, her father being Alexander Sutherland Roy. She was  described by Brora registrar, Jack McLennan, as a local worthy or character.  He remembers her walking between the Doll and Culmaily by way of the Iron Bridge and the Big Barns. Her route and  frequency was also reported by her grand-daughter, Annie Melville. She died in the poor houses at Mosshill, Brora having been put there when  her house burned down.  It is said she left some herrings in a covered  pan on the fire while at the sacraments. While there the thatch caught  fire.   Tom Aitchison notes that, 'she is reputed to have said that when the herring fleet was in she had a sore back for weeks'.  It  cannot be proved whether this back-ache was caused by lugging the heavy creels of 'silver darlings' from the boats to the quayside or as a result of more basic nocturnal activities!' Father of her child is John Melville who later married Mgt. Munro. Catherine was a Domestic Servant who died of Cerebral Apoplexy - D. Rpt. by  son, George.
