I have designated the line from my earliest known ancestor to myself as the mainline simply as it is the principal line of my research. It does not claim any precedence over other lines except in this interest to myself. 1. Alexander Melville, b. c1755, (son of William Melven and Ana Sutherland) ID number 0003A. B. c1755. Place of birth unknown. Parents probably William Melven and Ana Sutherland. Situation of grave stones and naming evidence suggests this. Very possibly brother of John Melville. Not found in 1841 census. Name Melville variously spelt as Melvelle, Melven, Melvin, Melville.

iii Alexander Melville, b. 1784, ID number 0069A. Surely there must have been an Alexander. Two unidentified Alexanders do exist - one must have come from this family. Was this the Alexander who married Lillie Sutherland and had childrern John and Sarah? Circumstantial evidence such places of birth of families suggests this is the case.

Said to have shared a house with brother Alexander for 20/30 years but they did not speak in all that time. After Alexander's death she moved to Golspie and cut herself off from family. Arranged own funeral and burial separately from rest of family. Said she was not liked by others and was eccentric.

Catherine: Catherine never married & only had one child. She was known as Kate Roy or Kate Ruadh. The designation Ruadh or Roy, meaning red, may have been applied due to her having red hair or, more likely, becuase it was a family by-name, her faher being Alexander Sutherland Roy. She was described by Brora registrar, Jack McLennan, as a local worthy or character. He remembers her walking between the Doll and Culmailly by way of the Iron Bridge and the Big Barns. Her route and frequency was also reported by her grand-daughter, Annie Melville. She died in the poor houses at Mosshill, Brora having been put there when her house burned down. It is said she left some herrings in a covered pan on the fire while at the sacraments. While there the thatch caught fire. Tom Aitchison notes that, 'she is reputed to have said that when the (hering0 fleet was in she had a sore back for weeks. It cannot be proved whether this back-acke was caused by lugging the heavy creels of 'silver darlings' from the boats to the quayside or as a result of more basic noctural activities!'
