[William MacKenzie Fraser]               [The Jane Ann Fraser Story]         [ Reminiscences of Colin Fraser]

DESCENT FROM SIMON FRASER BORN C1745

This page contains information on the Fraser family of Rosehall related to Rosses and Melvilles and who descended from Frasers from North West Sutherland.  Also connected to this group are Turners, Blacks and Halls who came as border shepherds with the Clearances.  Much research is my own but also other researchers and online resources have been used so supplement the detail I have collected.

The family descent comes from Simon Fraser born c1745 but is restricted to Six Generations to protect the privacy of living persons. Anyone with a need/right to know may get further details on later generations by contacting the webmaster. Within the Sixth Generation anyone who may have been born less than 100 years ago is given as 'Living' though obviously they may actually be deceased.

Corrections and additions will be gratefully received.

Generation One

1.  Simon Fraser, b. ABT 1745, resided in Creanich, Loch Shin, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland.

Notes: Resident Creanich, Loch Shin, Sutherland, Scotland according to a letter from Norman Fraser to his uncle Colin Fraser in Canada.

There is compelling evidence that Simon Fraser of Creanich, Loch Shin, Lairg is the father of John Fraser of Achnahaiglash, Assynt, Sutherland, Scotland due to the contents of a letter sent by a son of Hugh Fraser, Norman Fraser, to his uncle Colin in Canada stating that John Fraser was Colin's father and that John's father was Simon Fraser of Creanich. In the 1774 Assynt census of farms taken for the Sutherland Estate at Cromauld in the Tack of Mr Gray of Creech there is a Simon Fraser, his wife, four children and a servant. While there is no direct proof that this is either the Simon previously at Creanich or the father of John Fraser it cannot be discounted. Cromauld is in the southern tip of the Parish of Assynt and as the crow flies not a great distance from Creanich, Loch Shin. It is therefore tempting to speculate that this Simon Fraser and the one at Creanich were one and same and the father of John Fraser. It is, of course, only a suggestion and nothing more!

     He married Unknown.

                             Children:

            2.         i.  John Fraser b. ABT 1770.

Generation Two

2.  John Fraser, b. ABT 1770 in Scotland.

Notes: B. date given is a circa one. John was in the Sutherland Fencibles and served in Ireland in 1794 according to a letter from his nephew, Norman, the son of Hugh Fraser.  It is possible that the date for Ireland should be 1795 as the Reay Fencibles (a Sutherland voluntary regiment) were in Ireland from 1775 until they were disbanded in 1802. It is not certain that all members of the regiment would have been there all of the time and indeed since they were not regular army they would most likely have to return home from time to time to deal with matter on their own meager, rented land.

He married Isabella (Isobel) McDonald, ABT 1794 in Assynt, Sutherland, Scotland, b. in Scotland.

Isabella: Notes: At birth of children name given as Isobel but in later records of children given as Isabella.

William McPherson, born 1824 at Poul-Tigh-Keriken, Little Assynt, son of Neil Macpherson and Ann Fraser, and his wife Anne Kerr, born 1834 at Drumbeg, Assynt, daughter of Hugh Kerr and Mary Macleod, married 1857 in Assynt. William was a shepherd, and moved around quite a bit after mainly living in Ross and Cromarty. Some of their children, who were not born in Sutherland, due to William and Anne's unfortunate habit of not living in the same place for more than two years at a time are: Dolina, Robert, Murdoch, Neil, Colina and Mary.

Notes: Christina had illegitimate daughter to John Ross before she  married George Ross.        George: Notes: Blacksmith. In 1901 census Alexander Wood aged 39 years residing with family in Brora. George Ross sailed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from Liverpool on the SS Scandinavian arriving on 6th April 1913. The record indicates he is to progress by rail to Brooks, Alberta. Christina & George had a large family before George went to Canada to work, it was said by the family, on the building of the Duke of Sutherland's Railway in the Prairies. George is listed in 1916 census of Alberta as living as a lodger at the Canadian Pacific Railroad Supply Yards in the Bow River area. This was on or close to the property of the 4th Duke of Sutherland and the Duke was a major investor in the CPR so George could certainly be said to be working on the Duke's railway. George died in Canada at the age of 61 years.

She married (2) John Ross, in Unmarried, b. 1854 in Scotland, d. in England.

John: Notes: After fathering Annabella it is said he moved to England to study  &died there. It was said he was a weakly youth & his death was not  all that surprising. John had a brother Daniel (or Donald) who went to  New Zealand & was a rather successful in sheep farming.   Died, it is  said, Bury St. Edmunds. John's B. date a circa one. Said that he was  school Teacher.   There is only one John Ross listed in the  1871census for Rosehall of about the right age - a 22 year old  farm servant born Creich, Sutherland.

Notes: Donald and Rachel followed the gold rush to Morrison's Diggings near Dolly Creek in shire of Ballan, Moorarbool. Goldfield townships grew up haphazardly, first just a massed collection of tents and some wooden buildings with no planning when gold fever struck. The township of Morrison's was surveyed along the river after gold was discovered in the creek.  Most miners lived in tents at first which is probably where Rachel and Donald's first child, Donald, was born. Rachel had twin boys next while at Morrison's. Most houses were temporarily constructed of local materials including canvas or bark huts. Later the houses had substantial brick or stone fireplaces and most had floors laid down. The families travelled into the nearby town of Ballarat for provisions. The families kept fowls, pigs, goats and rabbits and those were cared for by the women and children.

Donald and family moved to Colac before 1864 for work.  Timber was the main attraction and sawmills operated milling sleepers for the Bendigo railway which were shipped to Geelong. Colac developed as the commercial centre and by 1860 it had grown in size to become a shire with its own newspaper, hospital and railway line.

By the early 1870s the family were on the move again this time to the important inland port of Echuca. In the 1870s wool became the lifeblood of the town with the wharf becoming a hive of activity with steamers when the river was high enough for them to travel. Donald found work there as a carrier. Echuca had 100 hotels and many two storey buildings in the main street and in 1874 a state school was built rhere. An iron bridge was opened in 1878 and this along with the railway resulted in the decline in river transport as rail transport became more extensive.

The next move for the MacLeod family was to Albany in Western Australia. They arrived in the port of Albany aboard the Wollowra in 1898 from Melbourne. The passenger list shows Donald, Rachel and three children arriving but the whole family actually travelled to Western Australia though some may have gone on a second ship. On the ship they made friends with Walter Taylor and his sister Alice and the families became lifelong friends. Donald settled in Denmark and two of the children married Taylors at Scots Church, Albany.

With the impending demise of Denmark Mills Donald and Rachel moved to Wellington Mills in 1903 when son Donald found work at the timber mills. The MacLeod and Taylor families were to spend most of their working lives in the timber industry as Millars opened many mills in the southwest including Wellington, Worsley, Holyoake, Jarradale, Mornington Mill, Nannup, Harvey and Yarloop.

Donald and Rachel always had family close by and their sons Alex and Jim who had returned to settle in Echuca often made trips across to visit them. Grandaughter Daisy Sutton remembers her father would fatten up calves and sell them to raise funds to travel west to visit his parents.

He married Rachel Cooke, 1860 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, b. 22 Jan 1840 in Framlingham, Suffolk, England, d. 25 Apr 1926 in Worsley, Western Australia, Australia.

Rachel: Notes: Two of Rachel's sisters who remained in England often sent her embroidery work as they were seamstresses. Rachel herself was also able to sew, embroider and do handiwork.
