      Blacksmith. In 1901 census Alexander Wood aged 39 years residing with family in Brora.George Ross sailed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from Liverpool on the SS Scandanavian arriving on 6th April 1913. The record indicates he is to progress by rail to Brooks, Alberta.Christina & George had a large family before George went to Canada to work, it was said by the family, on the building of the Duke of Sutherland's Railway in the Prairies. George is listed in 1916 census of Alberta as living as a lodger at the Canadian Pacific Railroad Supply Yards in the Bow River area. This was on or close to the property of the 4th Duke of Sutherland and the Duke was a major investor in the CPR so George could certainly be said to be working on the Duke's railway. George died in Canada at the age of 61 years.

     She married Sydney John Cole, 5 Jul 1918 in Wesleyan Methodist Church, Partick, Glasgow, Scotland, b. 3 Feb 1890 in Derby, Derbyshire, England (son of Stephen Coleman [1869 - 1897] and Clara Maria Graves [1870 - 1894]), occupation 1918 Corporal Royal Engineers, d. 7 Mar 1966 in Brora, Sutherland, Scotland.   

     Sydney:  Sydney John Coleman (changed later to Cole)  was born on 3rd Feb 1890 in Derby, the son of Stephen Coleman  (1869-1897), a shoemaker,  and Clara Maria Coleman, nee Graves (1870-1894), a silk worker.  (m. 1888 Derby)  They also had a short-lived daughter Ellen Coleman (1893 -95).  All these folk were born in Derby, the Coleman base for the previous 3 generations.  Stephen remarried after Clara’s early death to Eliza MacDonald (1895 Derby) but after his own similarly early death (TB) Sid and Ethel were brought up in the home of Joseph Hudson and Ellen Hudson, nee Coleman, a sister of Stephen (see 1901 census).

     Sydney Coleman can be found in Eastbourne in the 1911 census as a grocer’s assistant, age 21.  He joined the Royal Engineers in WW1 under the shortened surname of Cole - no-one in our family ever knew the reason for this.  He married Barbara Dingwall Ross on 5th July 1918 in Partick, Glasgow, when he was a Corporal chef in the RE. After the war he became a cook in the Merchant Navy, travelling the world.  His speciality was baking and he served on private steam yachts as well as the bigger vessels.  Barbara maintained the family home in Brora.

     Sid undertook one wartime Trans- Atlantic convoy but otherwise was engaged in convoy support at Loch Ewe, until discharge in May 1942. He was a chef in the Grand Hotel, Brora, after the War.
